Kristin Yoshimura, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor
Dr. Kristin Yoshimura is a marine microbial ecologist who strives to understand the physiology and ecology of marine and aquatic microbes around the world. Using 'omics methods and targeted gene approaches, as well as culturing and physiological experimentation, she works to gain a multifaceted view of microbes in their environment. Dr. Yoshimura earned her Ph.D. in marine microbial ecology from the University of Delaware and held two postdoctoral positions at Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute and University of Tennessee where she studied deep sea, high pressure microbiology and harmful algal blooms and their viruses, respectively. Outside of the lab, Dr. Yoshimura enjoys hiking, rock climbing, and scuba diving.
Benjamin Falls
Undergraduate Student
Benjamin Falls is a Sophomore biology major from Fairfax county, VA, with a microbiology concentration. He is responsible for culture work and laboratory upkeep. He has been with the lab since late 2022 and is currently studying how climate warming affects the growth rate and viral infection cycles in microbial phototrophs.
Delaney Monson
Undergraduate Student
Delaney Monson is a senior Biology major with a concentration in neuroscience and a minor in honors interdisciplinary studies who hails from Frederick, MD. She's been working with the lab since fall of 2022, and is currently utilizing bioinformatics to identify and analyze microbes found on a beaver skull! When she's not doing lab work or focused on academics, she can usually be found reading, listening to music, or showering her cat with affection.
Amanda Burger
Undergraduate Student
Amanda Burger is a junior Biology major with minors in Pre-Veterinary Medicine and Nonprofit Studies. She joined the lab in the fall of 2023, and studies how climate change is affecting the growth rate of microbial phototrophs. Outside of the lab, she can be found working at the Union, working in the biology department on the microbiology prep staff, or volunteering at the animal shelter!
